Vinyl Composition Tile in Katy

We install vinyl composition tile in the hard-working rooms of your home: garages, laundry and utility rooms, workshops and checkerboard kitchens. You get a slab checked for moisture, tiles rolled flat into fresh adhesive, and a schedule that tells you which days each room is off-limits.

What VCT Is and When It Makes Sense

Vinyl composition tile is mostly limestone filler bound with PVC resin, pressed into 12-inch squares about 1/8 inch thick. It is rigid and inexpensive to replace one tile at a time, and the color runs all the way through, so scuffs do not wear down to a different layer. It is the same material you see in schools and stores, scaled to the rooms in your home that take real abuse.

It is the right call when you want a floor you can scrub, re-polish and patch for decades, or when you want a classic checkerboard or border pattern laid one tile at a time. It is not the right pick for a room that floods or for a slab that pushes up moisture, because VCT is glued down and the adhesive fails when it stays damp. In those spaces we will point you toward luxury vinyl tile or tile flooring instead.

What Our VCT Installation Includes

Slab moisture testing
Most homes here sit on concrete slabs, and VCT adhesive releases when vapor keeps it wet. We test the slab before we confirm your install date, so a bad reading changes the plan early instead of lifting tiles months later.
Floor prep and leveling
We scrape off old adhesive, grind high spots and fill low spots and cracks with cement-based patch. A rigid 1/8-inch tile shows every ridge underneath, so flatness matters more here than with thicker floors.
Layout and pattern work
We find the true middle of the room and work outward from it, which keeps the partial tiles along opposite walls close to the same width. Checkerboards, borders and accent rows are dry-fit and marked on the slab before the first trowel of adhesive.
Adhesive, setting and rolling
Clear thin-spread adhesive is troweled on and left to reach tack before tiles are set. Each section is then rolled with a heavy roller to seat the tile fully.
Finish coats
New VCT is porous and dull. Once the adhesive has cured per the tile maker's instructions, we apply several coats of floor finish so it resists stains and cleans easily.
Trim, transitions and cleanup
We fit vinyl cove base or reinstall your trim, add transition strips at doorways and haul away scraps and old flooring.

Signs It Is Time for New VCT

  • Tiles popping loose

Loose or rocking tiles usually mean the adhesive has broken down, often from moisture or age. Once a few let go, edges catch and the tiles next to them follow.

  • Cracked or chipped corners

Cracks often trace a high spot or crack in the slab underneath. Replacing tiles without fixing the substrate just moves the crack to the new tile.

  • A garage or utility floor that will not come clean

Bare or painted concrete holds oil and dust. VCT with a good finish wipes clean and brightens the room.

  • Older 9-inch tiles

Tiles in a 9-by-9 size from before the 1980s can contain asbestos. We recommend testing before anyone breaks them up. If the test comes back positive, an abatement contractor handles removal, or in some rooms we can install over the old tile without disturbing it.

  • Dark seams and yellowing

Dirt trapped in worn finish and adhesive bleeding up at joints make a floor look tired no matter how often you mop.

Where the Cost of a VCT Job Comes From

VCT is one of the lower-cost materials per tile, which means most of your quote is the work around it: prep, layout and finishing. We build each price from the measure and the slab test, with every part listed on its own line. If removing the old floor uncovers something new, we show you, price it and wait for your go-ahead.

Slab condition

A flat, dry slab costs far less to prep than one with cracks, old adhesive or dips that need leveling compound.

Existing flooring removal

Pulling carpet is quick. Scraping glued-down vinyl or ceramic tile takes longer, and suspected asbestos adds testing and possibly an abatement contractor.

Pattern complexity

A single color laid square is the fastest. Checkerboards, borders and diagonal layouts mean more cuts and more layout time.

Obstacles in the space

Every cabinet base, water heater stand, pipe and doorway calls for a scribed cut. A cramped utility room therefore takes more labor per square foot than a wide, open garage bay.

Number of finish coats

A garage or workshop often gets more coats than a laundry room, which adds material and a return visit.

How Your VCT Job Runs, Day by Day

  1. 1

    Phone call and measure

We talk through the room, its use and the look you want, then set a visit to measure and test the slab. You get a written quote and a proposed schedule.

  2. 2

    Delivery and acclimation

Tile and adhesive need to sit in the conditioned room for about 48 hours, with your air conditioning running. We tell you the delivery day so the space is clear.

  3. 3

    Prep and install day

We arrive inside the window we gave you, protect nearby rooms and start with prep. If patch needs extra drying time or the slab reads high, we tell you that day what it means for the finish date.

  4. 4

    Cure and finish

Light foot traffic is usually fine the next day. Heavy items, rolling loads and finish coats wait until the adhesive has cured, and we come back on a set day to apply the finish.

  5. 5

    Final check together

Before we pack up, you look over every row and corner with us and point out anything that bothers you. We leave simple instructions for the finish and hand the room back ready for use.

Common Questions About Vinyl Composition Tile

Should I choose VCT or luxury vinyl tile?

Pick VCT if you want a low material cost and a hard surface that stands up to rolling tool chests, and you are fine maintaining a floor finish. Luxury vinyl tile is a softer, layered product with a printed image under a clear wear layer, so it looks more like stone and never needs polish. It also copes better with damp rooms. On the phone call we can walk through which one suits your space.

How long until we can use the room?

Walking on it is usually fine the day after install. Parking a car, rolling heavy equipment or moving appliances back should wait until the adhesive cures and finish is on, which we schedule as a set return visit. We give you those dates in writing before we start.

Can you put VCT in my garage?

Yes, as long as the slab tests dry enough and the garage is not flooding regularly. Hot tires can soften some finishes, so we talk through finish choice and where you park before we order.

Is the work covered?

We are insured, and our installations carry a 1-year workmanship warranty. If a tile lifts because of how we set it in that year, we come back and fix it.

How do I keep the shine?

Grit is what dulls the finish, so get loose dirt up with a broom or microfiber pad a few times a week. For washing, use a pH-neutral floor cleaner and a well-wrung mop, since harsh or ammonia cleaners strip the finish. Worn traffic lanes can be scrubbed and given fresh coats, so the tile underneath rarely needs replacing.

What if the schedule changes?

Slab readings, patch drying time or a late delivery can shift a date. When that happens, we call you as soon as we know, explain why and give you the new day.
