Laminate Flooring Installation in Katy

We install click-lock laminate over a subfloor we have checked for flatness and moisture, with the right underlayment and expansion gaps at every wall. Before the job starts, you know how many days it takes, when the crew arrives and who will call you if anything shifts.

Where Laminate Works and Where It Struggles

A laminate plank is built in layers: a high-density fiberboard core, a printed image of wood or stone, and a clear melamine wear layer over the top. The planks click together along their edges and float over the subfloor rather than being nailed or glued. That build resists scratches and costs less than solid wood, so it suits living rooms, bedrooms and hallways that see kids and pets.

Its weak point is water at the seams. Liquid left standing in a joint wicks into the fiberboard, and the swelling it causes is permanent. In a kitchen or laundry room, that makes a water-resistant line with coated, sealed edges the minimum, and where a washer hose or dishwasher line could actually let go, luxury vinyl plank is usually the safer floor. If you want real wood instead, our hardwood flooring page covers that option.

What Our Laminate Installation Includes

Subfloor check and leveling

Most homes here sit on concrete slabs. We run a long straightedge across the slab to find humps and dips, then grind the humps down and patch the dips, because a click joint that flexes over a low spot eventually breaks its lock and opens a gap.

Moisture barrier and underlayment

On concrete, a 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier goes down first unless the plank has one attached. The underlayment then cushions the floor and cuts the hollow sound laminate can have.

Acclimation and layout

Boxes sit in the rooms they are going into for the time the manufacturer specifies. We plan the layout so end joints stagger properly and no row at a wall ends up as a thin sliver.

Expansion gaps and transitions

We leave the gap the manufacturer calls for at every wall, cabinet and door frame, then cover it with baseboard or quarter round. Long runs or room-to-room openings get T-moldings where the product requires a break.

Door jambs, trim and cleanup

We undercut door casings so planks slide under them cleanly, reset or replace trim, and haul off packaging and old flooring when the job is done.

Signs It Is Time for New Laminate

  • Peaking or separating joints

Planks that tent upward at the seams usually ran out of expansion room. Gaps opening between rows often point to a subfloor that was never flattened.

  • Swollen or soft edges

Raised, fuzzy plank edges mean water got into the fiberboard core. That damage does not shrink back, and the affected planks need to come out.

  • Worn-through wear layer

When the pattern fades in traffic paths, the melamine is gone and the core is next.

  • Carpet that has had its run

Matted, stained carpet in a busy room is a common reason people move to laminate for easier cleaning and better resistance to pet claws.

How a Laminate Job Runs

  1. 1

    Phone call and measure

We talk through the rooms, your traffic and any water exposure, then set a time to measure and look at the subfloor. You get your quote by phone after that visit.

  2. 2

    Schedule set in writing

We give you the start date, the number of days the job should take and an arrival window for each morning. Product delivery is timed so the boxes can acclimate before install day.

  3. 3

    Prep day

Old flooring comes up, the slab or plywood is leveled and the vapor barrier goes down. If prep turns up something unexpected, like a high moisture reading, we stop and call you before going further.

  4. 4

    Installation

Rows go down with staggered joints and the expansion gap held at every edge. Trim and transitions go on last.

  5. 5

    Walkthrough

We walk the floor with you, check transitions and doors, and go over care basics like using a damp mop rather than a wet one.

Where Your Laminate Quote Comes From

Two things set the number: the plank line you choose and how much prep the subfloor needs. We measure and look at the floor before quoting, so the figure is built from your actual rooms. If tearing out the old floor reveals extra work, you hear about it before we do it.

Square footage and layout
Open, rectangular rooms go fastest. Closets, angled walls and many doorways add cuts and trim time.
Subfloor condition
A flat slab needs little. Grinding, self-leveling compound or plywood repair adds labor and material.
Removal of the old floor
Pulling carpet and pad is quick. Glued-down vinyl or tile takes longer and creates more debris.
Plank grade
Thickness, AC abrasion rating and sealed water-resistant edges all raise the material cost.
Stairs and trim
Stair treads and nosings are priced separately; see our stair flooring page for how those work.

Laminate Flooring Questions

Something not covered here? (346) 559-3108

How long does a laminate install take?

A few connected rooms often take one to three days once the product has acclimated. Heavy leveling or tile removal adds time. We give you the day count when we schedule, and we call you if prep findings change it.

Can laminate go over my existing floor?

Sometimes. It can float over flat sheet vinyl or tight, level tile, but never over carpet, because the soft base flexes the joints until they fail. We decide after checking what is down now.

Do I need to move my furniture?

Please clear small items, valuables and anything breakable before the crew shows up. Mention beds, sofas, heavy cabinets or a piano during our first conversation, and we will work out which room goes first and when each big piece gets shifted.

Is laminate safe in a kitchen?

Standard laminate is risky near a dishwasher or sink. Water-resistant laminate with sealed edges handles everyday spills if you wipe them up, and luxury vinyl plank is the better pick where leaks are likely.

Is the work covered?

Yes. We are insured, and every laminate installation comes with our 1-year workmanship warranty. If something about our installation work gives you trouble in that first year, call us and we will come look at it.
